In Azerbaijan protection LGBT citizens is not provided by law or by state appropriately and we can see it’s adverse consequences. Two hate crimes occurred during the last 10 days and one of them was ended with death. 19 years old young boy committed a suicide.
19 years old young boy committed a suicide as he couldn’t bear the discrimination by his family and peers, and also subjected to blackmail by unknown people. Another victim of hate crime was 17 years old.
When he met with the friend of his brother, 8 gangsters attacked to him and used violence against him. They filmed him and required some money for not to say to his parents about his homosexuality. As he couldn’t find the required money, the principal together with the accessories to the crime informed his parents. Now there is no information about him, who has been beaten by his parents.
Furthermore, although the president of Nefes LGBT Azerbaijan Alliance applied to the authorities of Sumqayit city in order to provide his safety and investigate the threats against him, law-enforcement agencies did not begin the investigation. As the law-enforcement agencies are indifferent about the sexual minorities which are regarded as high-risk group, and the offenders are left without punishment, it leads to increase in the amount of hate crimes and results in the loose of confidence to the above-mentioned agencies.
As an LGBT organization, we would like to express our regret at this situation. It is unacceptable that people face discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation and are being threatened. The offenders should be determined and put on trial.
